Tips For Using the Ending to a Story
Tips For Using the Ending to a StoryA proper ending to a sentence is the last piece of a larger narrative, and is what provides your reader with a sense of closure. An end is often one of the most difficult parts of writing, as not all of us have used this very common tool before.Beginning writers need a good beginning to work from. They begin by stating the point, or to start, with the title of the story and then proceed through a well-chosen beginning that sets the tone for the story, the characters, and of course, the ending. Using a beginning to tell a story, your readers will immediately sense the story's purpose. For beginning writers, the best place to start is always with the opening sentences. Beginning writers are almost always prompted to pick a story point, rather than the opening. This is an excellent choice, as it allows you to begin and tell the reader who you are, and helps you get the reader's attention before moving on to the rest of the story. The name of the author , as well as the title, should be in all capital letters. An opening sentence should never repeat any other words written in the paragraph, and a beginning writer must always give the opening sentence or first paragraph a lead. Every good beginning should have a scene break after a short, sharp description.A closing sentence should actually be a different sentence, but only if it relates to the first sentence and ends on a definite and memorable thought. A famous writer once said, 'Losing is part of the game, and you can't win.' This is a great choice to close the story, but should be worded exactly as it appears in the story. There is no sense in including filler sentences to try to connect the story to the closing thought. The opening and closing sentences should appear within the same paragraph or passage. You don't want the reader skipping over the opening and closing sentences, they need to be relevant to each other and they should be 'talked' to within the same paragraph or the same section of the story. For those writers who enjoy a fast paced writing style, they may wish to avoid the ending and the beginning entirely. A good story begins with an interesting piece of information and then proceeds to an engaging tale or an excellent idea, followed by a quick conclusion. Such stories seem to flow very naturally and produce an immediate 'read' in the reader. When using an ending to a story, make sure to make it last for at least one, if not more, pages. If a passage is not compelling enough to keep the reader's attention, he or she will probably want to move on.
